Working with one of the most powerful dub bands in the UK, we recently helped out with this promo for Resonators latest release Right Time. It's produced and directed by long term Tilt collaborator Badj Whipple.
Resonators are a well regarded dub band on the Wah Wah 45s label. We filmed the band at artist Jim Sanders house, which also doubles as his studio. It’s such a fascinating space – with Jim’s art covering every surface – and at first it was hard to believe that this was actually a house and not just an art studio. So we decided to approach the shoot as a domestic scene, rather than just using the space as an interesting backdrop.
Everything was filmed with our Canon C300 mkII, squeezed onto our DJI Ronin MX stabiliser. Long choreographed one-takes were adopted, where lead singer Kassia Zermon is seen in different rooms (and moving between them); with her outfit changing from room to room. We wanted to bend reality a little, for example seeing her exit a shot in one direction, then pan in the opposite direction to see her dressed differently, and doing something different in another part of the room.
The most challenging shot to capture was when we see Kassia coming up the stairs. At the top, Kass turns through the door on the right, while the camera turns slowly round and tracks through the door on the left, where we see Kassia dressed differently, sat working at a desk. It looks like we used a clever hidden cut, but with a rapid outfit change, and a mad scramble under the camera, we actually pulled it off as a one-take.
