If you want to be a film-maker or animator, you need a killer showreel. Read on to find out how to make yours blow people's socks off.

With more than 20 years experience in the visual effects (VFX) industry, Max Tyrie has watched A LOT of showreels, from undergraduates to professionals and everything in between.

In this film, Max zeros in on what it takes to create a showreel that gets you on to an A-list animation team, and how to use a ‘self-critical eye’ for highly effective showreel editing.

The slick showreel tick list

  • Best work first.
  • A 45-second reel of perfect work is far better than a four-minute reel of average work.
  • Nothing goes on your reel unless you are 100% happy with it (listen to the advice of experienced artists).
  • Reels should be on YouTube or Vimeo.
  • Passwords aren’t needed for student work.
