The Brief

How can we help People Leaders gain a deeper understanding of their roles and commitments to their teams throughout the employee lifecycle?

The Solution

Frame their leadership commitments within a Legacy story that celebrates how value-driven, innovative leadership has steered Lloyd’s Register through changing tides. The Legacy project aims to inspire present-day People Leaders to prepare for a future of technological advancements and environmental sustainability.

Background

As a leading provider of certification and compliance services within the marine and offshore industry, Lloyd’s Register has always prioritised safety and client needs.

With technological advancements and global demand to minimise environmental impact, Lloyd’s Register is implementing digitisation and decarbonisation strategies to automate operations while striving to meet industry targets of halving CO2 emissions by 2030.

People Leaders, comprising about a fifth of Lloyd’s Register’s global workforce, play a crucial role in supporting this effort by effectively leading their teams through these significant industry changes.

In their brief, Lloyd’s Register wanted a learning module and downloadable toolkit for their People Leaders to understand their expected roles and commitments clearly. As part of our strategy, we aimed to make the learning experience universally appealing to a global audience and align the People Leader roles with Lloyd’s Register’s broader business goals.

Our discovery process framed the challenge within a communication map, positioning People Leaders as the bridge between the executive leadership team and the core team. This helped with identifying existing bottlenecks in understanding their commitments, and executing their roles. We also delved into Lloyd’s Register’s rich archival history, and listened to present-day business partners and People Leaders, all of which helped shape the Legacy narrative.

Our Approach

We got to work right away with scripting the learning content. Because this was different from the traditional learning format, we developed functional wireframes alongside the script to keep the content flow in check, and iron out any delivery kinks early on.

To bring the “The Legacy” of Lloyd’s Register to life, we immerse learners in an alternate universe right from the start, using storytelling mechanics to create an exciting journey through time with an AI companion named TURI. TURI guides learners through the past, present, and future of the company, helping them explore a futuristic ship named “Legacy.” Because TURI plays a massive role in guiding the learner throughout the experience, we used AI to generate a quirky, magnetic, female-bot voice, enhanced with human voice-overs to enrich it.

In production, we added sound effects and sound bites to enhance the experience, supplement TURI’s voice and capture the ambience of different centuries and maritime experiences.

Once everything was in place, we reviewed the experience as a whole. We quickly realised that while the imagery was visually interesting, it struggled to hold attention during TURI’s 8-10 minute introductory audio. To get the visual imagery to complement the soundscape better, we suggested adding motion to the static images. The client trusted our judgement, and the motion team did a fantastic job, as always.

We have now delivered the experience and have been commissioned to translate it into multiple languages for a global audience. The visuals and videos have proven to be valuable campaign assets for promoting the course.

The best part of creating this course was the incredible people I got to work with. The refreshing energy of LR’s learning team and business partners, eager for bold and different. The added richness and depth from the LR Foundation team, ensuring the accuracy of the historical references within the course. The insightful conversations with LR People Leaders across four continents, revealing the nuances of leading teams in different contexts. And, of course, the creative genius of the Tilt team, building a leadership course around AI bots, sand-sailing, and quantum time travel. This course is aptly named, and bears the mark of all the wonderful hands that brought it to life.
