BIMA Digital Day

The event itself was extremely well organised by BIMA, with lots of resource material made available prior to the event.

On arriving we met Billy, the media studies teacher at PACA. A really inspiring guy who made myself an our Head of Development Sarah, very welcome.

The day began with an icebreaker game run by Sarah, getting students talking to others outside of their usual friendship group. This ended up being quite lively and certainly broke the ice.

We then moved on to giving the student a good overview of who Tilt are, what we do and the digital landscape we work in. We opened this up discussing ‘what is digital’ and ‘how important do you think this is’. Once the students realised how important this was in their daily lives, and the possibilities for future employment the questions started coming in thick and fast.

The majority of the afternoon was occupied with the challenges. We split students into small groups to come up with solutions to real life problems set by companies. The briefs centred around inspiring pet insurance, anti-bullying and wearable tech. This ended with a Dragons Den style presentation where the students presented their ideas, followed by a Q&A and feedback session.

The students worked really hard together and came up with some inspired ideas. Some of the highlights were a dog collar that interfaced with a Snap chat like social app, an interesting take on a VR history lesson, and Kingsman-like AR specs.

Both myself and Sarah really enjoyed the day and were inspired to share our expertise with the next generation of digital thinkers.

The feedback for the day has been really positive too, with the students “gaining a real insight into Digital Media”. We’ll certainly be getting involved with this again next year and are looking forward to working with PACA on other projects in the near future.
