Develop Deloitte

Curious?

The Brief

Leadership training ends on Friday. Leadership starts on Monday.

Every new leader takes time to get good, and a firm pays for every week of it. Deloitte had new face-to-face training for the skills it expects of a leader. But a classroom can’t be there at four o’clock on a bad afternoon, and that’s where competence is built. The measure of success was blunt: time to competency. Shorten it.

The Solution

Put the whole leadership strategy in every leader’s pocket.

Develop Deloitte: a leadership survival toolkit for the moment a leader needs it. Decades of models and theory, distilled into advice you can act on before the next meeting. Around it, three tools: Packs, sending spaced lessons to a new joiner’s phone; a Knowledge Wallet for keeping what’s useful; and Motivators, a live read on what drives your team.

Background

Most people step into leadership years before anyone shows them how.

As part of a firm-wide digital transformation, Deloitte reworked its leadership strategy: a framework setting out what it expects of every leader, taught face to face.

Zenger Folkman’s data on 17,000 leaders puts the typical first management role at 30 and the first leadership training at 42: a decade of practising on real people, untrained. Gallup finds managers account for at least 70% of the variance in team engagement. Get those first years wrong and the whole team pays.

Face-to-face training narrows that gap but can’t close it. The first difficult conversation, the first underperformer, the first time the team looks to you for an answer: those moments arrive between courses, and each one faced alone stretches the time it takes to become competent. Deloitte wanted that time cut.

Our Approach

Curate the skills. Lose the jargon. Build for the moment.

We started in workshops with Deloitte’s leadership team, curating the skills that would sit at the heart of the new strategy. Then the harder job: turning a mountain of leadership models, theories and guidance into advice a leader could actually use.

The content had to do two jobs at once. Emotional, so a leader stepping up feels understood rather than lectured. Practical, so the next step is always clear. Rich, relevant, bite-sized, and never more than a tap away.

Then we built for the three places a new leader is most exposed: what they need to know, what they want to keep, and who they’re leading. Packs, Knowledge Wallet, Motivators.

The result is Develop Deloitte: everything the firm expects of a leader, in that leader’s pocket, ready before they are.

Key Project Assets

Develop Deloitte

The digital destination for the whole leadership strategy: rich, bite-sized, emotionally engaging content that turns Deloitte’s new framework into guidance a leader can reach for at the point of need.

The Curated Skills Framework

Deloitte’s leadership models, theories and guidance, curated with the leadership team and distilled into plain-English advice, so the strategy reads like help from someone who’s been there, not a textbook.

Packs

Spaced micro-learning delivered straight to new joiners’ phones, drip-feeding the essentials over time rather than in one sitting, so what matters most sticks when it matters most.

Knowledge Wallet

A personalised Pinterest for learning, where each leader pins the advice and tools they want to keep, building a resource shaped by their own challenges rather than a syllabus.

Motivators

Real-time insight into what motivates a leader’s team, turning the hardest part of leading, understanding the people in front of you, from guesswork into something to act on.

Impact

Develop Deloitte gave the new leadership strategy somewhere to live: not a document or a diary date, but a resource leaders carry with them. Deloitte’s own verdict says the rest.

“Milestone” Deloitte’s word for where the work sits in its leadership vision and strategy.
Point of need Guidance that lives on a leader’s phone, there for the question they have right now, not the one on the syllabus.
Three tools Packs, Knowledge Wallet and Motivators: one for what a leader needs to know, one for what they want to keep, one for who they lead.

Project Insights

From launched to lived

Most leadership strategies are launched, not lived. They’re written with care, taught with care, then left to survive on their own in a leader’s memory. A strategy is only as strong as its reach, and reach is measured at the moment a leader needs it, not the moment the firm chose to teach it.

Develop Deloitte works because it meets leaders where they already are: on a phone, between meetings, with a team waiting. Competence is built in practice either way. The only question is whether the practice is supported. Build for that.

A fantastic milestone in our vision and strategy, brought to life through brilliant and inspiring content! Develop Deloitte is a brilliant example of collaboration and innovation at work.
